Bio

From the Allison Tribune Feb. 5, 1981 ESTHER LEERHOFF Esther Leerhoff, daughter of Peter and Bertha Bruns Luppen, was born in Grundy County on September 13, 1916. She attended elementary school in Hardin county. They moved to Aplington in 1925 and she graduated from Aplington High School in 1933. She attended Iowa State teacher's College and taught in rural school in Ripley Township for three years. She returned to school, attending Business College in Des Moines and Mason City. On October 1, 1938, she was united in marriage to Irving Leerhoff. They started their married life in Hampton, Iowa, later moving to Butler County, where they farmed, first near Allison and, from 1960, near Clarksville. They move to their present home in 1968. Esther was a member of the Unity Presbyterian Church and Women, of which she was presently the secretary. She was a member of the Friendly Neighbor Club, and taught Sunday School while they were near Allison. She was preceded in death by a still-born son, Paul Irving, and her mother, Bertha Bruns Luppen. She is survived by her husband, Irving Leerhoff of Clarksville; a son, Paul Edward Leerhoff of Cedar Falls; a daughter Sandra Kay Rhodes of Hampton; seven grandchildren; her father, Peter Luppen of Aplington; and a sister Marlys, Mrs. Ed Frey, of Aplington. Esther Leerhoff passed away on January 27, 1981, at the Waverly Hospital after a long illness, at the age of 64 years, 4 months, and 14 days. Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 30, 1981, at the Unity Presbyterian Church, rural Clarksville, with Rev. Roy Hjelmaas officiating. Casketbearers were Robert Frey, Bud Williams, Dale Heeren, Donald Heeren, Kenneth toll, and Vern Schmidt. Organist was Betty Reed. Interment was in the Allison Cemetery, Allison, Iowa. Schwartz Funeral Home of Clarksville was in charge of arrangements.
