Carol A. Thomsen, 72 Carol A. Thomsen, 72, of Ord passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012, surrounded by her family after a short, but very courageous battle with non-smokers lung cancer. Carol was born June 25, 1939, in Kingman, Arizona to Art D. and Olga (Scherzberg) Rux. She spent her early childhood in Kingman. Her mother passed away when Carol was six years old, she then moved to Grand Island, NE and lived with her aunt and uncle, Dan and Alma (Scherzberg) Sanders, and cousin Bernadeen. Carol attended school first in Kingman, then in Grand Island throughout her childhood. During her freshman year of high school, she moved with her Dad and Step-Mom, (Mary Ellen Crouch) to Greeley, NE where she attended high school. The family moved to Ord, and Carol graduated from Ord High School in 1957. On December 26, 1959, Carol was united in marriage to Leo Thomsen of Ord. Three daughters were born to this union. The family resided in the Springdale area of Valley County, east of Ord. After Leo passed away in 2003, Carol moved into Ord. During her lifetime, Carol worked at various jobs in Ord including the Kozy Nook Café, Lee's Dime Store, J.M. McDonalds, Valley County Hospital and also owned and operated Mode O' Day store in Ord. Carol was a member of the Springdale Kensington Extension Club, Plain Valley Extension Club, Grocery Kart bowling team, Pinochle card club and Memory Stitchers Quilting Club. She loved to can pickles and was known as the pickle lady at the Scherzberg and Thomsen family reunions. Carol enjoyed crocheting, knitting, gardening, playing cards, bowling, Husker Women's Volleyball and was an avid fisherman. She especially enjoyed quilting and had made many items for her family. Those left to cherish her memory are three daughters and sons-in-law, Sharyl and Dave Hofpar of Ulysses, Birdie and John Augustyn of Kearney and Jolene and Roger Rathje of Surprise; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Cameo (Jason) Rogers of Gretna, Ashley (Eric) Arneson of Hastings, Lindsey Hofpar of Ulysses, Tara Hofpar of Lincoln, Chris Augustyn of Holdrege, Jackie (Jarred) Horsky of Omaha , Jasper Augustyn of Kearney and Jenna and Jordan Rathje of Surprise; three great-grandchildren, Bailey and Mikayla Rogers of Gretna and Braylen Arneson of Hastings. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; her mother, father and step-mother, and an infant brother, Donald Keith. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 23, 2012, at the Ord Memorial Chapel. Pastor David Schultz will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
