Bio

Leonard Wilson (Sam) Self was called home to heaven on October 27, 2016. Sam was one of 13 children born to Felix and Vera Self on August 30, 1921 in McKinney, TX. While working at the railroad he met and married the love of his life, Glenda Oleta Self on April 3, 1940 when she climbed out the window of her parent's home to elope in Sachse, TX. During their 71 years together, Sam and Oleta were blessed with 2 children, 5 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Sam accomplished many things in his lifetime. He was a farmer and worked the railroads in his younger years. When Sam worked at the Ford plant in Dallas, he began Self Custom Homes. After his retirement from Ford he continued to build homes for over 300 families in Wylie and the surrounding areas. Sam also liked to dabble in various other small business adventures including owning a shoe store or two, carpet store, and even a hair salon when his wife decided to be a hair dresser. Sam's most precious treasures were his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents, many of his siblings, son Bobby Self, and his beloved wife Oleta Self. He is survived by his: Daughter-in-Law Verna Self of Wylie, son Don Self of Colorado; Grandchildren, Mark Self and his wife Kim of Mt. Vernon; Matt Self and his wife JoAnna of Ovalo; Chad Self and his wife Kim of Houston, Alecia Self of Wylie, and Karen Colbeck and her husband Billy of Dallas. Sam is also survived by his sisters Bea Brewer of Wylie and Louise Barrow of Blue Ridge, brother Alton Self of Garland; and great-grandchildren, Alexis Rothenberger and her husband Drew of Wylie; Samuel, Lori, Sadie, and Maura Self of Ovalo; Kal and Mable Self of Houston; Lorin Henderson of Mt. Vernon; Retta and Willa Colbeck of Dallas; and Zachary and Chelsea Self. Sam lived a long and wonderful life, and in recent years when asked how he and Oleta made it through 71 years of marriage, he simply said he guessed it was just good clean living.
