BRADENTON, Fla. — Charles William Smith Jr., 87, of Bradenton, Fla., died Oct. 11, 2010, at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton. He was born Dec. 22, 1922, in Virginia and lived in Chesterfield for many years before moving to Florida in 2001. He worked for Anaconda then retired from Ecoff Trucking Company. He was a proud World War II U.S. Army veteran and a member of Masonic Lodge 730. He loved hunting, playing guitar and cards with his family and beloved friends. He is survived by sons, Robert Smith of Anderson and Lynn (Debbie) Wells of Coeburn, Va.; daughters, Jean (Dennis) Cheshier of Middletown, Charlsia (Carl) Wagner of Ellenton, Fla., Cosette (Steve) Powell of Bradenton, Deirdre Smith of Indianapolis; daughter-in-law, Debbie Smith Harmening of Pendleton; brother, Lawrence (Shirley) Smith of Georgia; sister, Juanita Fowler of Leesburg, Fla.; 15 grandchildren, Steve, Doug, Eddie, Michael, Shannon, James, Melissa, Wesley, Jeremy, Whitney, Amy, Bryan, Joshua, Shawn, Tiffany; 35 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends, Pam, Winnona, Jackie and Birdie, and his beloved companion, Irene Ruefenacht. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Smith; parents, Charles and Alice Smith; children, Charles, Lyle, Sandra and Marcus; granddaughter, Angie Shetterly; and two great-grandchildren, Philip Wagner and Tristen Gillam.
