Bio

Last week, it was learned about the death of Job D. Semler at 9:20 o'clock Wednesday night, May 17, 1939. The funeral was held in the Methodist Church Friday afternoon, May 19. Because of the illness of Rev. V. R. Bell, the pastor of the church, the funeral sermon was preached by Rev. C. W. Gossard, pastor of the Free Methodist Church. The pall bearers were Don Lysinger, Ellwyn Brass, Elton Orvis, Clark Metcalf, Carl Metcalf, and Louis Bitter. Internment was made in the Semler family lot in the West Union Cemetery where his wife and three children were buried. Job Daniel Joseph, son of John and Mary Ann Semler, was born in Fillmore County, Minnesota, on Sep 11, 1857, and passed away in Sargent, Nebraska, at the home of his eldest son George R. Semler, on May 17, 1939, at the age of 81 years, 8 months and 6 days. When 21 years of age, Mr Semler came to Nebraska and homesteaded in Custer County in the year 1879. His farm was located four miles east and a mile south of Sargent which was not founded until four years after Mr Semler filed on his homestead. West Union was the nearest town at that time and in that town lived the family of Mr and Mrs John and Chaney Orvis. Here Mr Semler met their daughter, Lillie Orvis, and in the year 1883, they were united in marriage at Broken Bow, Nebraska. To Mr and Mrs Semler, even children were born, three passing away in childhood. Those living are Mrs Daisy (William) Scholtes of Houlton, Oregon; George R. Semler of Sargent, Nebraska; Burt R. Semler of Fort Collins, Colorado; and Mrs Rozelle (Glenn) Hunt of Spokane, Washington. Mrs Semler passed away on March 2, 1936. About the year 1887, Mr Semler was induced by the proprietor of a butcher shop here in Sargent to go into partnership with him. After several months, Mr Semler purchased his partner's interest and for many years he was engaged in the butcher shop business here in Sargent, and made his home here most of the time since. Mr Semler was a true and faithful husband, a kind father, a good neighbor and a loyal citizen. Besides his four children, he is survived by five grand children and an aged sister.
