Rosenberg Herald, March 24, 1944: Funeral services for Mr. John Selig, who passed away at the home of his son, Henry Selig, on March 14, 1944, were held at the Methodist Church in Needville March 16, 1944 at 3 o'clock, with Rev. A.M. Roos officiating. Interment took place in the Needville Public Cemetery, with the Foerster Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Anton Schmidt, Carl and Hans Theusen, John Gaubatz, Henry and John Miller. Mr. John Selig was born January 28, 1856 in Ebsheim, France. In the year 1858, he came with his parents to America and settled at Deerfield, Cook County, Illinois. At the age of 22, they left and moved to Kansas where he was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Emilie Hoppe. After living there for about 4 years, they moved to Texas and settled on a farm near Brenham, Washington County. To this union, six children were born, five boys and one girl. Soon after they came to Brenham, they united with the Methodist Episcopal Church of which he remained a faithful member all of his life. In the year 1903, Mr. Selig came with his family to Needville where he lived the rest of his life, with the exception of nine years when he lived near Pickering, La. Mr. Selig passed silently to his heavenly reward on March 14, 1944 at 5:30 p.m. in the home of his son, Henry Selig, reaching the age of 88 years, 1 month, and 15 days. His wife and three sons preceded him in death, two in infancy and one at the age of 28 years. Mourning his departure are three children, Ben F. Selig, Henry L. Selig, and Flora L. Selig; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ben Selig; and two grandsons, Edgar and Lester Selig; besides other relatives and friends.
