Bio

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother Jessie L. (Stevens) Burk passed from this life into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Friday, July 18, 2014. She was the daughter of Hatley Samuel Sr. and Elsie Lee (Young) Stevens, born October 9, 1922. She married J.B. Burk on January 25, 1939 in Van Alstyne, TX. He preceded her in death April 15, 1978. She was a lovely lady, very devoted mother to her family, the best cook ever, and could fix just about anything. She was always busy and loved working in her yard as witnessed by her neighbors. She was up in her 80s when she finally retired her lawn mower. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Jimmy Burk, grandson, Jimmy Scott Burk, brothers, H.S. Stevens, Jr, Daniel Stevens, David Stevens, Wayne Stevens, Calvin Stevens, sisters, Beulah Mae Bell and her husband Charlie Bell and Lorraine Robertson. Brother-in-law, E. C. Franklin, and grandson-in-law Sammy Williams. She is survived by her children Doyle Burk (Barbara), Carol Powell, Jerry Burk (Virginia), and daughter-in-law Collette Burk. Brother and his wife Clyde and Nettie Jo Stevens, sister, Jewell Franklin. Grandchildren, Tammy Burk, Stacy Burk, Shannon Powell, Sherri Williams, Sharla Ross (Alan), Chris Burk (Emily), and Rhea Jarrett (Jarred). Great-grandchildren, Dustin Burk, Michelle and Rebecca Williams, Dani and Meradith Ross, and Katie Jarrett. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm Monday, July 21, 2014 at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne, TX. Family visitation will be at 1:00 pm prior to the funeral. Brother Jim Poole will officiate the service and burial will follow in the Van Alstyne Cemetery. A special thank you to the staff of Homestead of Sherman, Heart to Heart Hospice and the 4th floor nursing staff at Texoma Medical Center for their loving, compassionate care of our mother. Her spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
