"Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 at the First Methodist Church for Deed Alexander Layton, who died suddenly Monday night about 7:30 at his home on West North Broadway. His death was attributed to a heart attack, which followed a five day's illness. He had been in bad health for the past six months. Rev. H. Grady May conducted the funeral services, assisted by Rev. Jack Alford and Rev. Albert A. Clark. Pallbearers were Clovis Pinion, Elmer R. Mays, Jim B. Brown, Murl L. Pharr, Marion Stone, and Clovis Mays, Jr. Burial was at Lee Cemetery. Mr. Layton was born near Summerville, Ga., May 26, 1878, to James W. and Sarah Jane Storey Layton. The family moved to Texas and Wood County in 1901. He lived in the Cartwright community a number of years, moving to Winnsboro 25 years ago. Except for two years in which he resided at Greenville, Mr. Layton had been actively engaged in farming here since that time. He married Lillian Etna Carroll on Dec. 28, 1915, in Greenville, TX. He was a member of the Methodist Church here for the past 27 years. Surviving are his widow, Lillian E. Layton, one daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Layton, a sister, Miss Sallie Layton, and two brothers, Luck L. and Oscar T. Layton, all of Winnsboro. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers John Willie, Arthur L., and James Storey Layton; sisters Ruth Jay and an infant sister; and an infant daughter."
