Donald D. Brainard, 95, died Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls. Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 17 at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, with burial at 3:00 PM at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery, Storm Lake, IA. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Donald David Brainard, son of Floyd and Bess (Novak) Brainard, was born March 14, 1916 in Platte, SD. He graduated from Owanka (SD) High School. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills of South Dakota. He then worked in Rapid City, SD. Donald entered the U.S. Army on May 20, 1942 in Ft. Crook, NE. He earned several medals including the Bronze Star while serving in the European Theatre with Battery B of the 301st Field Artillery Battalion during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 31, 1945 at Ft. Sheridan, IL. Upon his return, Donald lived for a time in Breda, IA before moving to Storm Lake, IA. While there he worked at Birdsell Furniture and served as Assistant Fire Chief for the Storm Lake Volunteer Fire Department. He then lived in Worthington, MN before moving to Sioux Falls, SD in 1972. Donald was united in marriage with Milre Wehling on November 9, 1976 in Sioux Falls. He worked for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad until retiring in 1982. Donald served on the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Board. He was a jack of all trades and could fix most anything. He loved tinkering with old cars, especially his 1935 Plymouth Coupe. Don also enjoyed woodworking. His specialty was crafting furniture for clocks, as well as repairing old clocks and watches. Grateful for having shared his life are five children, Lona Faye Feldman and her husband, Kenneth, Eugene, OR, Dawn Lee Yard and her husband, Toby, Waseca, MN, Heidi Kay Ringstad, Plano, TX, Dean Allen Brainard, Sioux Falls, SD, David James Brainard, Willmar, MN; six grandchildren, Megan, Amber, Kristine, Michelle, Kenneth and Judd; seven great-grandchildren, Eliana, Austin, Derek, Brooks, Lane, Zane and Marley; and a host of other relatives and friends. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Milre, on May 7, 2009; a son, William David Brainard; his parents; and a sister, Dorothy Hill.
