DENTON DEAD Stephen H. Denton, 87 years of age, died at his home in Bladen on Friday, June 23. He had been in failing health for several years but his mind had stayed as keen and alert as ever and was so until his death. None of his children were able to be here at his last illness, but Emmet Rogers and Bert Collicott were with him when he passed away. One son, John Denton, who lives at Norfolk, Nebr., is seriously ill himself and another son, Harry Denton, who lives in California, had not arrived on Wednesday night. The body is at Merten's mortuary in Blue Hill, pending funeral arrangements. Obituary will be published next week. ----------------- From "The Blue Hill Leader", Blue Hill, Nebraska dated Friday, July 7, 1939, Page 3: STEPHEN HARRISON DENTON Stephen Harrison Denton was born near Petersburg, Ill., February 28, 1852 and died June 23, 1939, at his home at Bladen, Nebr., at the age of 87 years, 3 months and 25 days. He grew to manhood at Petersburg and was united in marriage to a Miss Knowles of that city. To this union were born four children, 3 sons and 1 daughter. One son, Homer, and the daughter, Jennie, died early in life. Mrs. Denton also passed away while the family still lived at Petersburg, and later, after moving to Nebraska he was married to Mrs. Mary Norris and to this union was born one daughter, Velma. In 1886 he moved to Bromfield, Nebr., which is now Giltner, where he resided until the spring of 1902 when he moved to a farm five miles southwest of Bladen where he lived one year, moving to Bladen in the spring of 1903 where he resided until the time of his death. He is survived by two sons, John W. of Norfolk, who because of ill health was unable to be present at the funeral services, and C. H. Denton of La Crescents, Calif.; and one daughter, Mrs. Velma Davidson of Grand Island, Nebr.; also two sisters, Mrs. W. H. Sampson of Denver, Colo., and Mrs. Mollie Degge, of Petersburg, Ill., and many other relatives and friends. To all of these, he was familiarly known as "Uncle Steve." He always enjoyed visiting with folks, appreciated their company and was immensely delighted to hear any humorous anecdote. He was a man of strong will, who never faltered in performing the most difficult task and who took great pride in paying his debts and in the fact that when he departed this life he would not owe any man. He never employed any one without insisting that he pay them a good, fair wage. Although he had been in failing health for several years, he retained a good mind and his thinking was as clear as ever in spite of his advanced age of 87 years. Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church in Bladen on Friday, June 30 with the Rev. H. S. Weary in charge. Pallbearers were P. C. Grandstaff, Bert Collicott, Chas. Henderson, Chas. Reichstein, John Saylor and Jack Dennis. A mixed quartet composed of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Bennett, John Worley and Mrs. Fred Morey sang three hymns. Interment was in East Lawn cemetery. Relatives from a distance attending the funeral services for S. H. Denton were a son, Harry Denton of La Crescenta, Calif., a daughter, Mrs. Velma Davidson of Grand Island, a niece, Mrs. Ross Evans and a nephew, Chas. Denton, both of Arcadia, Nebr.; a grand-nephew, Kenneth Denton of Kearney, Nebr. One son, John of Norfolk, was unable to attend due to illness.
