Bio

James lived in the era prior to plural marriage being outlawed in the United States. He was a polygamist and married three times: first to Margaret Ellen Johnson on 5 April 1882 at St. George, Washington, Utah Territory. They had eight known children. He married a second time to Margaret's younger sister, Elizabeth Lavina Johnson 28 November 1885 at St. George. They had three known children. He married third, Nannie Amelia Smith 10 February 1889 at St. George. They had six known children, his last child was with Nannie, born 1903. Out of the 8 he had with Margaret, four died as infants, one son at about 17 and only one son and 2 daughters lived to adult age. His three with Elizabeth lived and all married. His 6 children with Nannie lived to adulthood, except for their first son, who died at 22 and never married. BISHOP KILLED. Santa Fe, New Mexico, June 8, 1904 -- J. B. Ashcroft of Fruitland, a bishop of the Mormon Church and manager of the co-operative store at Fruitland, was accidentally killed while blasting rock in the construction of an irrigating ditch for the Navajo Indians near Fruitland. He was knocked from a cliff by falling rocks, death resulting instantly.
