Bio

Jemima Melissa Younker Harris Ulman, was born in Ohio and grew up there. She married Marcus Harris and they had two sons, Frank Leslie and Jason. In 1862, they took her brother's offer of renting his farm in Kansas Territory. One of the reasons given for the move was the hope that Melissa's health would improve by living there. They jouneyed by train and wagon train. In late fall of 1863, there was an outbreak of typhoid in the Denver and Melissa lost both her husband and younger son, Jason. Her brother, Jason Younker, arranged for her and little Frank Leslie to return to Ohio by wagon and train in the spring of 1864. Within time, Melissa married Jacob Ulman who raised her son as his own along with his own children.
