Samuel Batty, who lived four miles east of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, died in Dr. Andrews office in Belgrade last Friday p.m. August 8, 1913. He had come to Belgrade Friday morning for a load of lumber with which he left town about 2:00 o'clock. He was found unconscious at the foot of the first big hill outside of corporation limits by Jesse Moon who was coming into town. He rushed to town and sent an automobile to bring Mr. Batty to the Dr's office where he died about two hours later. He had regained consciousness and recognized a daughter who was the postmistress in Cedar Rapids, and had come by automobile to be with her father. Cause of the accident is unknown but Mr. Batty had suffered from heart failure and asthma for a number of years. It is thought perhaps a heart failure caused him to fall from the wagon. However, there was no indication that he had been run over. Mr. Batty served in the Civil War, enlisting in 1861. He was buried in Sunset Cemetery. He leaves a wife, Dena, and the following named children, Louise, Samuel Jr., Phillip, Walter, Mabel and Seth to mourn his departure. --------------newspaper article Samuel Batty was born in 1853.
