CAIRO -- Russell D. Stephens, 82, of Cairo died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Cairo United Methodist Church in Cairo. The Rev. Dale Lambert will officiate. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Gibbon. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the church. Apfel-O'Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Stephens was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Omaha to William and Dora (Sharp) Stephens. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife, Leona, of Cairo; three sons and daughters-in-law, Clarence R. and Laura Stephens of Grand Island, Larry W. and Kathy Stephens of New Florence, Pa. and Douglas C. and Lydia Stephens of Waverly Hall, Ga.; and five daughters and sons-in-law, Carol E. and Mick Walker of Loveland, Colo., Lucinda E. "Cindy" and Jim Metcalf of Parkersburg, W. Va., Doborah A. and Abed Mishtawy of Lutz, Fla., Nancy S. and Rick Tarulis of Naperville, Ill. and Patricia D. and Roy Fields of Cairo. Other survivors include 18 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. He was raised in Kearney and attended school in Kearney. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in November 1939 in California. He served in the European Theater during World War II. He was a paratrooper and a ranger. He was involved in the battle at Omaha Beach along with other battles. He was honorably discharged in October 1945 having reached the rank of sergeant. He was united in marriage to Janice Dillon Oct. 28, 1945, in Kearney. The couple lived in the Kearney area. Janice died on Oct. 23, 1966. He married Leona Belle Scott on March 19, 1977. The couple lived in Cairo. He worked as a shoe cobbler and a carpenter. He also worked at Spelts Schultz Lumber in Grand Island before retiring in 1982. He was a member of the Cairo Methodist Church and the Eagles in Grand Island. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice; several step-brothers; sisters; and one great-grandson, Clayton Russell Stephens
