HAFER, ELIZABETH BARBARA *ELIZA*--Mrs. Eliza Hafer, a pioneer resident of Fillmore county, passed away Saturday, July 8, 1950, at Denver, Col., where she had made her home the past three years on account of poor health. Elizabeth Barbara Eggenberger, daughter of John Peter and Bertha Eggenberger, was born November 16, 1869 in Ragatz, Switzerland. In 1872 the family sailed for the United States. They located at Beatrice, Neb., while waiting to take a homestead near Strang in Fillmore county. After proving up on the homestead, the family moved to Carleton, residing there seven years and then living at Hebron two years. In 1886 they moved back to the vicinity of Strang. In her youth Mrs. Hafer was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Bruning by Rev. Mr. Buechler. In 1895 she was married to William Kretke. To this union three children were born, Lucia (Mrs. Ivan L. McCashland) who died in 1928, Ruth (Mrs. L. J. Scherer) and William, both of Denver. After living in Milwaukee, Wis., from 1898 to 1910, she moved to Geneva, Neb., with her children, whom she educated in the Geneva schools. She was married to Peter Hafer in 1919. In 1922 she moved to Lincoln, where she maintained a home for her son while he completed his work at the University of Nebraska. She then maintained her home in Geneva while spending considerable time visiting her children. She was a member of the First Congregational church and the Rebekah lodge of Geneva. Besides her son and daughter, she is survived by two grandchildren, Benjamin W. McCashland of Lincoln and George Leslie Kretke of Denver, two great-grandchildren, Billy and David McCashland of Lincoln, two brothers Paul Eggenberger of Strang and Herman Eggenberger of Brighton, Col., two sisters, Miss Emma Eggenberger of Geneva and Mrs. K. R. Smith of Chico, Cal., 12 nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were a sister, Anna Eggenberger and two brothers, Peter and August Eggenberger. Funeral services were held at the congregational church in Geneva at 2 p. m. Wednesday, July 12. Rev. William G. Bohi officiated. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery.
