Obituary: Former State Pastor Dies In Florida The Rev. James Slicer Purcell, methodist minister who formerly held pastorates in several Mississippi towns, died Friday in a hospital in Arcadia, Florida, following a long illness. His home was in Lakeland, Florida, where he had lived for the last 18 years. He was a native of Black Hawk, Miss., and a graduate of Millsaps college. For several years he was pastor of the Methodist Church in Star, and it was there that he met and married his wife, the former Miss Leslie Harper, of Star. He later held pastorates in Wesson, Crystal Springs, Montrose, Philadelphia, and Rolling Fork. His survivors include his widow, Mrs. Leslie Harper Purcell, of Lakeland, Fla.; three sons, James Purcell of Davidson, N. C, Wilbur Purcell, of Lakeland, .Fla., and professor Ralph Purcell, of Sweet Briar College, Sweet Briar, Va.; three daughters, Mrs. Foster Health, of Lakeland, Fla., Mrs. Walter Bennett, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and Mrs. Lloyd Anderson, of Jacksonville, Fla.; six sisters, Mrs. Mary Burnham, of Mendenhall, Mrs. Omer Evans, of Butler, Ala., Miss Fannie M. Purcell, Mrs. Joe J. Flowers, Sr., both of Shreveport, La.. Mrs. Nettie M. Barr, of Plain Dealing, La., and Mrs. E. L. Ramsey, of San Bineto, Texas. His body is scheduled to arrive in Jackson at 5:20 a.m. Monday and will be at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home until the funeral time. Funeral services will be held from the Star Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday conducted by the Rev. Andrew F. Gallman, pastor of the West Park Methodist Church, and assisted by the Rev. Eugie Price of Woodville, with interment in the Weslyanna cemetery at Star. Pallbearers will be Dan Loflin, Milton Loflin, Drewery Hilton, Will Dear, Tommy Ainsworth, and Tommy Price, all of Star.
