Meet Gordon Charles Wirick who was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 27, 1898. He was the second of eight children born to Lucy Hannah Fisher and Charles Grant Wirick, although only four children lived past childhood. According to his questionnaire, Gordon lived at 953 South 900 East and was a student at the local high school. On April 27, 1917, Gordon volunteered to join the Army Coast Artillery Corps. He was assigned to the 21st Battalion in the 1st Anti-Aircraft Sector. He trained at Fort Scott in Kansas for eight months before going overseas on December 14, 1917. It is noted that Gordon spent seven and half months in continuous service on the front including two and half months in the Alsace Sector and two and half months in the Verdun Sector, east of Meuse River. After fifteen months abroad, Gordon was officially discharged on March 24, 1919 at Fort Russell in Wyoming. Some further research tells us that Gordon returned to Utah after the war. On June 26, 1924, he married Mildred Bai in Salt Lake City and they had two sons. The 1930 census places the family in Salt Lake City and reveals that Gordon was working as a newspaper reporter. Unfortunately, Gordon died on April 6, 1937 after taking his own life. His death certificate states that the 38 year old had worked for the newspaper for the past 14 years. Gordon is buried at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Millcreek. Further research also revealed that Gordon's older brother Grant, who was working as a civil engineer for the Utah Copper Company, also volunteered to join the Army. Grant spent ten and half months overseas in Bordeaux and Southern France. Luckily, Grant returned to Utah after the war and lived a long life.
