Bio

Frank was the son of Frank Morton Hughes and Sarah Hamilton Frank married Mona Eleanor Conner and had the following children: Minnie Marcene, Dena Darlene, Berdine Beth, Gerald Emmitt, Lonnie Leroy, and Norman Roy Obituary: SERVICES HELD MONDAY AT CHURCH IN BURWELL FOR EMMITT HUGHES Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan 22, at the United Methodist church in Burwell for Emmitt Hughes of Sargeant, with rev. Richard Shapland officiating. Singers were Mrs. Virginia Olcott amd Mrs. Edna Mae Hoppes, with Ida Helmkemp, organist. Pallbearers were Mike Hughes, Melvin Hughes, Jerry Hughes, Randy Hughes, Sterling Hughes, Ora Hughes, and Pat Hughes. Place of internment was the Cotton wood cemetery, Burwell. The Rhoad funeral home of Sargent was in charge of arrangements. Emmitt Earl Hughes, son of Frank and Sarah Hamilton Hughes, was born Feb 26, 1901 in Greeley county, Neb. and passed into his eternal home, suddenly Jan. 18, 1973 at hos home in Sargent, Neb. Emmitt recieved his education in Greeley county and moved to Garfield county in 1918. He was united in marriage to Mona Conner at her home in Garfield county on Dec. 16, 1923. They observed their 49th wedding anniversary this past December. To this union six children were born. They farmed and ranched in Garfield county until he was forced to retire after a heart attack in 1962. They moved to Sargent in April of 1964. Emmitt enjoyed life and being with people. He liked all kinds of sports, and to work with animals and growing plants. In his retirement years he found great pleasure in his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He will be remembered by those who loved him as a faithful father, loving husband and dear friend. He was always ready to offer a helping hand wherever he found a need to be met. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Walter. Emmitt leaves to hold his sacred memory his wife, Mona, his children, Marcene Livermore of Grand Island, Darlene(Mrs. Bill) Gumb, Berdine (Mrs. Joe) Rysavy, Gerald, and Lonnie all of Sargent, and Norman of Grand Island; 18 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren' 4 sisters, Donna Ketchmark and Mabel Cook, both of Greeley, Veda Conner and Paso Robles, California and Julia Warwick of Burwell;two brothers, Frank (Bud) and Roy both of Burwell, and many others relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Becker and daughter, Mrs. Kay Brown, all of Grand Island, attended the Emmitt Hughes funeral services Monday, and were later coffee guests of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Schnieder.
