Gertrude L. Osentowski, 96, of Ord died Sunday, Jan. 22, 2012, at the Valley View Living Center in Ord. Gertrude was born March 9, 1915, at Ottawa, Iowa to Thomas and Agnes (Maslonka) Kapustka. Gertrude was preceded in death by: husband, Thomas J. Osentowski, and daughter, Connie Mendyk. Survivors are: daughters and son-in-law, Geraldine Ptacnik of Bloomfield and Ruth and Al Smith of Sargent; sons and daughter-in-law, LaVerne and Evelyn Osentowski of Ord and Clarence Osentowski of Lincoln; son-in-law, Carl Mendyk and his wife, Alberta, of Arcadia; 20 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. During her childhood the family moved to a farm west of Ord, where she was raised and received her education. On May 21, 1935, Gertrude was united in marriage to Thomas J. Osentowski at Elyria. The couple farmed in the Valley County area. In 1968, they moved into Ord. Gertrude was a cook for the Ord Public Schools. Mr. Osentowski passed away Sept. 25, 2000. Gertrude continued to make her home in Ord living at Parkview, Grandview Assisted and Independent Living Center and Valley View Living Center. Gertrude was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church where she was involved in the Altar Society. She also belonged to the VFW Auxiliary and played an instrumental in the Ord Senior Center. Gertrude enjoyed playing cards and bingo, dancing, sewing and gardening. Gertrude was also preceded in death by: parents; son-in-law, Vernon Ptacnik; twin great-grandsons, Jerome and Justin Osentowski; brother, Bolish Kapustka and sister, Barbara Swanek. Burial was in the Ord Catholic Cemetery, Ord, NE. Published in The Grand Island Independent on January 24, 2012
