Ora M. Shelton (1915 - 2012) Ora M. Shelton, 96, a retired associate minister of University Christian Church, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Wednesday at University Christian Church. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. in Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Thompson's Harveson & Cole. Memorial: If desired, memorials may be given to University Christian Church, 2720 S. University Drive, Fort Worth, Texas 76109; Brite Divinity School, TCU Box 298130, Fort Worth, Texas 76129; or a charity of choice. Born in Lindale, she was reared in East Texas and graduated as valedictorian from Athens High School in 1932. After working as secretary for four years, she entered Texas Christian University, graduating in 1941 with a B.A. degree "with distinction" in sociology. She worked for a short time in Little Rock, Ark., before returning to Fort Worth to join the staff of University Christian Church and to enroll in Brite College of the Bible (now Brite Divinity School). She received the master of arts degree in religious education in 1948 and was ordained to Christian Ministry by University Christian Church. Her primary areas of ministry were in Christian education, with an emphasis on children, and in pastoral care and membership. She was named associate minister emeritus when she retired in 1980. In 1997, she received the Distinguished Minister's Award in Pastoral Ministry by the Brite Alumnae Association. In 2009 she was recognized by Brite Divinity School with the Kenneth Teegarden Award for her outstanding support of Brite's mission to educate men and women for ministry. In addition to her numerous contributions to the church and denominational religious education schools and organizations, she was an active community volunteer. She served as an officer of the All Saints Hospital Auxiliary Board and received the 5,000- hour pin. She was a volunteer with the Senior Citizens' Fair as as a member of Altrusa Club. She was an officer of the Etta Newby Club of the Fort Worth Woman's Club and a member of the TCU Women Exes and AAUW.
