James Kelton "Jack" January who voluntarily enlisted in the U. S. Navy, was assigned to the U. S. S. Pensacola, and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The U. S. S. Pensacola left Pearl Harbor on November 29, 1941, on a convoy mission originally destined for Manilla, in the Phillipine Islands. The U. S. S. Pensacola and her crew, narrowly missed the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on December 7, 1941. James Kelton "Jack" January would be killed in action, on November 30, 1942, in a Naval battle called the Battle of Tassafronga, with the Japanese, in the South Pacific Ocean, near Guadalcanal and Savo Island, in an area now called Iron Bottom Sound.
