Bio

Services for Horace Sandlin, 83, of Lubbock will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church. Burial will be in the City of Lubbock Cemetery under the direction of Sanders Funeral Home. He died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000, in Lubbock. He was born Nov. 23, 1916, in Whitt. He moved to Lubbock in 1926 and attended Lubbock schools, including Dupre Elementary, Thompson Junior High and Lubbock High School, where he graduated in 1934. He attended the University of Kansas, where he received an engineering certificate with honors, earning higher grades in engineering than anyone in his class. He served in the U.S Navy, stationed in San Diego, from 1944 until 1946. He married Helen Zeh July 29, 1939. He was owner of Zeh Auto Repair until he retired in 1983. Mayor Allan Henry of Lubbock offered a resolution before the City Council in 1983 designating Horace and Henry Sandlin Day. His auto repair business was in the community for 35 years. He served as president of the Independent Garagemen's Association of Texas. He was a "Life Deacon" at First Baptist Church with over 50 years of service. Until his death, he made daily hospital visitations throughout the area. Survivors include his wife; one son, Sandy of Dallas; two daughters, Summer of Dallas and Suzanna of Houston; two half-sisters, Letha Houts of Fort Worth and Iola of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and one half-brother, W.L. Graves of Whitt.
