Bio

George Patrick Burke, 72, died on May 30, 2001 in Green Valley, Ariz. He was a lawyer in Kimball for 45 years. A memorial service was held at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church, Green Valley, on June 1, 2001. Green Valley Mortuary and Holy Hope Cemetery, Tucson, are in charge of the funeral arrangements. George was born in Alliance, Nebraska, on April 27, 1929. He graduated from St. Agnes Academy High School in Alliance, NE. He left the family ranch to attend college and graduated from Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska, in 1952 with a Juris Doctor degree. As a senior at Creighton, he was elected Class President and also President of the Student Bar Association. He was a member of Phi Alpha Delta, the national law honorary fraternity. From the Creighton Student Bar Association he was honored for outstanding service to the School of Law, 1949 to 1952. After graduation, he joined the Army as a First Lieutenant in the JAG Corp and served in that capacity in the states and in Okinawa until his discharge. In 1955 he moved to Kimball, Neb., and became a member of the law firm of Van Steenberg, Myers and Burke. George practiced law in Kimball, NE, for 45 years. The firm still bears his name of Burke and Wilson. He was married to JoAnne in South Saint Paul, Minnesota, on July 8, 1961. He lived in Green Valley, Ariz., for the past four years. George was a member of the American Bar Association and Nebraska State Bar. He served on the Disciplinary Committee for the Nebraska State bar for several years and is a past member of the American Association of Trial Lawyers. He served as city attorney for both Kimball and Sidney, Neb., and president of the Kimball Cosmopolitan Club. He was also a past member of Knights of Columbus, Elks, Kimball Library Board and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Kimball, NE. He is survived by his wife, JoAnne, four children — Jennifer Biggs, Tucson, AZ; Laurie Tomczyk, Littleton, CO; John Burke, Imperial, NE; and Daniel Burke, Sidney, NE, six grandchildren, two brothers, Jack Burke and Bernard Burke, both of Alliance, NE, and sister Barbara Morrill of Alliance, NE. He was precede in death by one sister. Remembrances can to made to the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) Society or to a charity of choice.
