Stephen B. Phillips was born in 1773 in Greenville, South Carolina. He was the first born of Dempsey Phillips (1754-1833) and Susanna Miller or Hiller (1760-1818). Siblings: Jacob, Joseph, John, David, Benjamin, Joshua, Jane and Dempsey. He married Catherine West (1780-1830) around 1798 and they were the parents of John Wesley Phillips (1799–1880), Jeremiah B. Phillips (1805–1855), Elizabeth [Phillips] Hawkins (1806–1850), Stephen B. Phillips (1810–1898), Zion Phillips (1815–1850) and Oliver Perry Phillips (1818–1866). Stephen's occupation was in agriculture and according to the 1830 United States Census Records there were seven people in his household. He was also the owner of 15 slaves. His wife Catherine passed away in 1830 and he later married Jane Hazeltine (1773-1838). The 1840 Census Record shows him as 67 years of age, widowed and the owner of 13 slaves, 10 of them working in agriculture. Stephen lived his entire life in Greenville County and he died 28 July 1849 in Greenville, South Carolina and is buried in the Reedy River Baptist Church Cemetery. Greenville Death Notices 1848-49 Stephen Phillips. Died at his residence, six miles above Greenville C.H. on the 28th, Mr. Stephen Phillips aged 76 years. The deceased was one of our oldest settlers, having been a resident of the immediate neighborhood in which he died, nearly or quite sixty years. He has left a large number of relatives and friends to lament his departure..
