Silver Star Citation. Private First Class Earl L. Greenhalgh, 39118387, Infantry United States Army. For gallantry in action on Leyte, Philippine Islands on 13 December 1944. During an enemy attack, Private First Class Greenhalgh's squad suffered heavy casualties. The machine gunner was killed and his weapon had become inoperative. In the face of intense fire, this Soldier directed the evacuations of the three remaining members of the squad, all of whom were wounded, and continued to defend the position, using hand grenades and a carbine. Private First Class Greenhalgh's heroic actions reflects great credit on himself and is keeping with the finest traditions of the military service..
