DeLue Melrose Harkins, 87, of Cody, died Sept. 24 at his home. He was the fifth child of Noal Melrose and Bertha Woodward Harkins. The family moved to Wyoming when DeLue was five months old and homesteaded south of Shawnee, where he grew up and went to school. While he was working for Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, he met Irene Elmina Turner of Shawnee. They were married in Lusk on June 15, 1929. In November 1929, Dee and Irene moved with both sets of parents to Willow Springs, Mo., where they stayed until the depression was ending. In 1938, the Harkins families returned to Converse County. Mr. Harkins ranched and worked for the U.S. Soil Conservation until the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when he went to work at Irwin Mills in Douglas. He worked for the firm until 1960 at which time he and his wife moved to Twin Falls, Idaho; and remained there for a number of years before living for a short time in other areas of Idaho, Washington and Oregon. They returned to Twin Falls in 1989 and lived there until the death of Irene May 8, 1996. DeLue then moved to Cody to be near his daughter and her family. He is survived by children Lucelia Ziska of Cody, Chester Harkins of Coos Bay, Ore.; Clifford (Pamela) Harkins of Sheridan, and Clare (Nancy) Harkins of Boise; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife Irene; his parents; two brothers; three sisters; and one grandchild. Information was obtained from his obituary and cemetery records.
