Died at 1:15 am on Sunday, June 5, 1904, at home four miles west of Fulton, Kansas. He was 76 years old. The funeral took place at the M. E. church. Rev. J. R. Ewbank officiated. James was born in Liverpool, England in 1828; came to America in 1850 arriving at New Orleans, where he remained for a time. Later drifting northward and settled in Bates County, MO, where he met and married Miss Dorinda Starr who preceeded him in death. He came to Kansas in 1856 and remained to the time of his death. His second marriage occurred in Fulton to Miss Sarah Bolling. He was a member of the Adventist church for 30 years. He is buried in the east central area of the Fairview Cemetery north of Fulton, KS. He owned a Blacksmithh shop in Joplin, MO in 1874. He lived in Fulton, KS in 1900.
