Barnett Dies Suddenly At Home James Elmore Barnett, 49, county clerk of Gonzales, died suddenly at his residence here Saturday at 2:30 p.m. and funeral services were held Sunday at the First Baptist church. Dr. J. W. Parker officiated, and burial wa in the Luling City cemetery. His death, caused by a hemorrhage, was a shock to his many friends over the county, for he had been in good health up to the time of his death. Mr. Barnett, for the past 12 years county clerk of Gonzales county, was treasurer of the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce , treasurer of The Odd Fellows Lodge, and a member of Gonzales post 40, American Legion, and the First Baptist church, of which he had been a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was born near Giddings May 22, 1897, the son of J. F. and Elizabeth Poe Barnett. He was married Sep. 2, 1917, to Miss Blanche Brown of Luling, and two years later they moved to Oak Forest in this county where he was engaged in the mercantile business. To them were born three children. A son, Forest Dale, died in childhood. He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Mary Blanche Simpson and Mrs. Jo Nell Mercer; a brother, John C. Barnett of Yoakum; three sisters, Mrs. Nannie Hess of Lubbock, Mrs. Nora Hess of Pyron and Mrs. Callie Tomlison of Ropesville. Mr. Barnett was baptized into the fellowship of the First Baptist church here July 29, 1925 and was ordained deacon. For many years he taught a Sunday s hill class of boys and later of young men. The First Baptist church was filled with friends who came to pay a finial tribute. Dr. Parker, his pastor, read a short biographical sketch and brought a message of comfort to those who mourned his passing.
