San Antonio Express-News (TX) - November 8, 1992 J. William "Bill" Roten was a self-made man who opened his own insurance agency despite not having graduated from college. In 1946, he began J.W. Roten and Co. Roten ran the company until his retirement in 1988. Roten, 82, died Friday at home from lung cancer. "He retired, but he still went into the office every day," said his wife, LaVerne Roten of San Antonio. Roten didn't participate in the daily operations, but he went to the office anyway, she said. His son, Robert Roten, operates the business now. Born April 27, 1910, in Mountain Peak, Roten attended high school in Venus and after graduation attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas and McMurry University in Abilene. In 1941, Roten joined the Navy and was stationed for four years in San Diego, Calif. He married LaVerne Schneringer of Broken Bow, Neb., in 1943. Even without a college degree, an interest in business encouraged Roten to start his insurance agency, said his daughter-in-law, Beth Roten of San Antonio. "Business was where his head was." she said. Roten also was active in the Coker United Methodist Church and was on many committees, his wife said. She said his illness brought the family together in his last years. "He was a very loving person but had trouble showing it," his wife added. When the couple moved in the 1950s to San Antonio, they were among the residents in Hill Country Village, his daughter-in-law said. He served as the first mayor of the city and served non-consecutive terms, which totaled eight years. His wife said he demanded a lot from the family but always gave more in return. "Family always came first," she said. Additional survivors include two sons, Billy Roten of Venus and Larry Roten of San Antonio; a daughter, Mary Collum of San Antonio; a sister, Hazel Carvalho of Oceanside, Calif.; a brother, Jack Roten of Dallas; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at the Coker United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Sassman and the Rev. John Gibbs officiating. Burial in Sunset Memorial Park will be arranged by Porter Loring.
