Bio

Janice A. Decker, 53, of Minden, died Saturday, March 22, 1997, at her home after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Minden with the Rev. Bill Jardine officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Hamlet Cemetery in Hamlet. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden. She was born Sept. 24, 1943, to Orval and Goldie (Reeder) Daniel in Greeley, Colo., and grew up in Colorado and Nebraska. On March 4, 1977, she married Dennis Decker. The couple moved seven years ago to Minden, where she worked as a waitress for J.J.'s City Cafe, Pioneer Restaurant and Shay's Restaurant. Survivors include her husband, Minden; sons, Dean Cook, Trenton, and Mark Garton, Colorado Springs, Colo.; stepsons, Dennis Jr., Virginia Beach, Va., and Randy, Palisade; mother, Durango, Colo.; sister Donna Mae Garton, North Platte; brothers, Bobby Archilles, Auburn, Calif., and Lester Daniel, Durango; and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father and an infant daughter. Source: The Kearney [Nebraska] Hub , March 24, 1997 --------- Janice was married at least three times. Her first marriage to John Cook (in 1959) ended in divorce. Her second marriage was to Kenneth Garton in 1967, and he was killed in an automobile crash in 1972. She married to Dennis Decker in 1977. ---------- Janice's mother, Goldie Reeder, married Orval Daniel when Janice was a teenager. In some places, Janice's maiden name is listed as Neely and in others it is listed as Daniel. Her mother, Goldie Reeder, was previously married to James Oliver Neely (1920-1983); they married in 1938, and he enlisted in the military in January 1943--Janice was born in September 1943. Goldie and James' marriage must have ended not long after he enlisted; in Washington state (Clark County) in March 1944, James had a license to marry Darlene M. Brunner.
