CEDAR CITY/HURRICANE--Stewart LaVon Batty, 92, passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011 at the Dixie Regional Medical Center after an illness. He was born August 24, 1919 in Toquerville, Utah to Archie Edmond Batty and Mary Isabell Stewart Batty. He married Velva Topham on May 2, 1947 in the St. George LDS Temple. Stewart or LaVon, as many friends and family knew him, was raised in both Toquerville and Pintura, Utah. He attended his first 8 years of school in Toquerville and then attended Hurricane High School until graduation. He joined the National Guard in 1937 and was federalized to the regular army in 1941. He was assigned to California in 1941 to serve in the Military Police. Later, he went to Europe and fought in the "Battle of the Bulge". LaVon was discharged from the military in November 1945. He lived in Cedar City for 56 years and the last 8 years of his life in Hurricane, Utah. Over his years in Cedar City he worked for Ivan Orton at the Conoco Station on Main Street, Leigh Furniture delivering furniture and laying carpet, Southern Utah Lumber, and learned to finish cement from George A. Wood. Over the years, he worked as a painting contractor and took great pride in his profession. The last 14 years of his working career were at Southern Utah University working as a painter. He enjoyed refinishing furniture, deer hunting, riding horses on Pine Valley Mountain, gathering firewood, picnics, seeing new places, raising a garden, working on his property at Paragonah, and spending time with his family and friends in the mountains of Southern Utah. He is survived by his son, Alan (Larena) Batty who currently live in Hurricane, Utah; grandsons, Craig Bernell (Paige) Batty; and Jess Alan Batty; great grandson, Carter Alan Batty all currently living in Logan, Utah; and sister, Evelyn Foster of Salt Lake City, Utah; brother and sister-in-law Bill and Marcille Topham of Cedar City, Utah and sisters-in-law, Evon Gore of Chesapeake, Va; and Mary Jo Beatty of Cedar City, Utah. He is preceded in death by his wife, Velva Batty and son, Bernell Batty; sisters Isabel Batty, Pearl Bolander, Zelma Batty, Iris Fredericks, and LaGene Lamph; brothers, Arvil Batty, and (Bill) William Beatty. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 26, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 5th Ward Chapel, 274 South 100 West, in Hurricane, Utah. Viewings will be held on Friday, November 25, 2011 in the Southern Utah Mortuary, 190 North, 300 West, Cedar City, Utah from 5:30-7:30 P.M. and again Saturday, November 26, 2011 in Hurricane at the 5th Ward LDS Church, 247 South, 100 West from 9:30 to 10:45 A. M. prior to the services. Interment will take place in the Cedar City Cemetery at 3:00 P.M
