Barcley "Buss" A. Harder 08/21/1914 - 4/17/2007 Barcley "Buss" A. Harder, 92 of Gering, Nebraska died Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at Regional West Medical Center. His funeral service will be held Monday, April 23, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Central Church of Christ with Pastor Howard Roseberry officiating. Interment will be at West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Gering Memorial Chapel. Buss was born on August 21, 1914 to Bernice and Don Harder. His father died while he was in the Army of a flu epidemic. After his death his mother moved to Alliance, NE. and later married Elmer Nowlan. Buss received his education in Alliance and later joined the Civil Conservation Corps from 1934 to 1939, where he worked as a chef for several hundred workers. He loved the work and the travel and has told a lot of stories about his time with corps. After leaving the Corps, he went to work for Terry Carpenter as a bookkeeper, where he met Lois Daily, who also worked for Mr. Carpenter. They were married on October 28, 1941 in Mitchell, NE. Buss and Lois later moved to Sterling, CO., where he managed a gas station for Terry Carpenter. After the station was closed, they moved to California, where he worked at the Mare Island Navy Yard as the head of a sandblasting crew where they worked on ships that were damaged from the war. They later moved back to Nebraska to Alliance for a short time then to Gering. In Gering, he worked for Railway Express, the Crossman Brothers and the Onstott Brothers. He later built and operated Harders Market on 10th Street until it sold in 1951. After the store was sold, Buss went to work for Safeway until his retirement. After his retirement, Buss owned a cabin in Custer, South Dakota where he enjoyed fishing, walking and enjoying the open air. During his last years, his true love was his time having coffee at McDonalds with all his coffee buddies. Many stories were shared and passed on. He will be truly missed by all. Buss was a member of the Scottsbluff Elks Club for 32 years, member of the North Platte Valley Historical Association, Central Church of Christ and the Masons. Survivors include his wife Lois of Gering; son and wife Lee and Missy Harder of Gering; daughter and husband Carolyn and Richard Sillin of Ogden, Utah; son Don Harder of Scottsbluff and daughter and husband Patty and Charles Williams of Ft. Collins, CO; grandchildren Shaun Ramsey, Sid Ramsey, Brandon Harder, Ashlee Harder, Allison Ramirez, Ryan Plummer and Jordan Plummer and 7 great grandchildren. Buss was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters. A memorial has been established to the church.
