Bio

Rev. Andrew Jackson Morgan, 66, was one of the most beloved Baptist ministers of Breckenridge, a man of honor. Services were held at the First Baptist Church with Rev. H.H. McBride and C.M. Caldwell of Abilene, officiated, assisted with the other ministers of Breckenridge. His wife preceded in death. Mr. Morgan moved with his family to Texas when he was seven years old, his family settled in Parker County. He and Mrs. Morgan were married 12 August 1902 at Weatherford. The couple came to Breckenridge in August of 1919. Mr. Morgan was the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Breckenridge for five years until ill health forced him to retire. He came to Breckenridge from France where he was a Y.M.C.A. Chaplain during World War I. While pastor of the Baptist Church, he was a member of the board of the Southern Baptist State Convention. Mr. Morgan graduated from Simmons University, now Hardin-Simmons in 1914 and he traveled for Simmons University and the Theological Seminary. He served as Mayor of Breckenridge and was Stephens County Judge. He organized the Rough Neck Bible Class and was elected lifetime teacher. He was awarded the Certificate of Merit by the VFW, the first bestowed by the post. He officiated the funerals of all veterans in the city and was called upon to assist in funeral perhaps more than any minister in town. Mr. Morgan was a leading speaker for the sale of bonds during World War II. He was a 32nd degree Mason. Survivors: two children - J.J. Morgan and Mrs. Mary Colvin; four brothers - George, Ed, Jim and Dorris Morgan; five sisters - Mrs. Annie Furlowe, Mrs. Beckey Butler, Mrs. John Brown, Mrs. Martha Theadore, Mrs. Mattie Shumacher; grandchildren - Bob Speer, J.J. Morgan, Jr.; Adrian, Janpele and Anita Jean Morgan; one great-grandchild. Mr. Morgan never did get to see his great-grandchild. Funeral home record, obituary, death certificate, and ordination records show he was born in Mississippi.
