Bio

Converse County pioneer, William Mike Wanek, died in the hospital at Lusk, Wyoming last Thursday following an illness of several years. Born April 19, 1887, the son of Joe and Mary Wanek, he came to Wyoming about 45 years ago and homesteaded north of Lost Spring. He later moved to a ranch 14 miles north of Lost Spring where he and his brother, Joe Wanek, were engaged in the ranching business for a number of years. Following the death of his brother in 1940 he operated this ranch in partnership with Mrs. Nora Wanek. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Wanek o Alliance, Neb.; three brothers, Louie and Amos Wanek of Hemingford, Neb., and Oscar Wanek of Story, Wyo.; two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Bartos of Lusk and Lillie Kennedy of Alliance, Neb. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. (Information was obtained from his obituary in the Douglas Budget May 6, 1948 by Betty Alberts, FAG Member #47293729.) He never married and had no children. He was a part of his brothers life Joe. The two of them would be working the ranch then at days end Willie would get on his horse to head home. His brother Joe would be worried if he had made it home so Joe would get on his horse to check and see that Willie made it home. Then Joe would head back to the ranch, then Willie would saddle up to make sure Joe arrived back home. Alcohol was not a part of this equation. Well I will say it wasn't but we all know. Uncle Willie was a great guy. He was loved by many. His niece Mildred Bell Wanek Hudson thought the world of him. Uncle Willie was a fine dressed individual and always drove a nice new car. He wasn't afraid of a hard days work. Uncle Willie passed away at the age of 61, ten days passed his birthday. His legacy has been passed on down through the generations. info provided by his Great Grand Nephew Larry Lee Sheets Ciet.
