PRICE DIES SUDDENLY Popular Beaumont Physician Is A Victim of Heart Disease Striken with heart disease pre-monitory symptoms of which he had recognized for some time, Dr. Jacob Samuel Price, one if the most popular and successful of Beaumont's physicians, died at 12:55 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the Hotel Dieu, where he had gone to call upon a patient. The death of Dr. Price came as a shock to hundreds of friends here, and particularly to many of the cities older families, whose physician he had been for years Deceased was 57 years old. A native of Johnson County Missouri, in 1851, son of John Alexander Price, a Presbyterian minister, Dr. Price came to Beaumont 26 years ago and soon became one of the leaders of his profession, a position he retained until his death. He formerly conducted a sanitarium here, and had in addition, a large private practice. He had been a member of the local Exemption Board from the time the selective draft service law went into effect and in that capacity had passed upon the physical qualifications of most of the thousands of men who were sent from Beaumont to the army. Dr. Price had been twice married, his first wife having been Miss Lula Stellcox of Austin. About 14 years ago here was married to Miss Mabel Brouck, who survived him and who was visiting with his sister in San Diego, Cal. At the time of his death. Two children of his first marriage survive. They are Albert Price now in the army in France, and Mrs. Lucille Price Hutchings, residing in Austin, her husband also being overseas. Two boys were born of the second marriage - James, age 12, and John, 10 years old. These children are in the city. A brother, Charles Price, of China, and the sister in California are the only living relatives so far as could be ascertained last night. The body is held at the undertaking parlor of Pipkin and Brulin, awaiting a message from the widow who was immediately notified. Arrangements for the funeral will naturally depend upon her wishes, and it is possible interment will not occur until her arrival Beaumont Enterprise September 12, 1918 DR. J. S. Dr. Price was one of the best known physicians in Texas and stood high in the medical profession in all parts of the country. He came to Beaumont in 1892 and the only interruption in his practice during these 26 years was when he would spend a few weeks at some famous medical school attending lectures. He was studious, intensely devoted to his profession and never lost an opportunity to improve his ability to administer to the sick. Dr. Price was at one time of the state board of health and been the medical member of the Beaumont exemption board since its organization He took a patriotic interest in this work and most of his time since the United States entered the war was devoted to the nation. He was held in high esteem not only in Texas, but throughout the state. Dr. Price is survived by his wife and two minior sons Jimmie and John, who, with their mother were in California spending the summer when the husband and father breathed his last. TXGENWEB: Jefferson Co, TX Webpage: Hotel Dieu article EARLY SOUTHEAST TEXAS "DOCS" WERE MEDICAL MEN OF IRON By W. T. Block Reprinted from Beaumont ENTERPRISE-JOURNAL, November 9, 1980 (Entire article kept in documents file) ...In March, 1892, the board consisted of Drs. Sholars and J. C. Seastrunk of Orange; J. B. Roberts of Woodville; and Drs. B. F. Calhoun and ***J. S. PRICE*** of Beaumont. During the annual election of that year, the following were elected officers of the society for 1892, as follows: Drs. Perkins of Sabine, president; Thompson and Sholars, vice presidents; and F. Hydra of Orange, sec.-treasurer. In addition, Drs. Calhoun of Beaumont, J. Saunders of Orange, and Roberts of Woodville were chosen as the society's censors. The board also "acted on the application" of Dr. T. E. Stone of Beaumont and certified him for practice... Other physicians began practice in Beaumont during the 1890s, but space will not permit any lengthy elaboration about their lives, since they could hardly be defined as "frontier saddlebag physicians." In 1899, six doctors organized the Jefferson County Medical Society. ***DR. J. S. PRICE*** came in 1891, and in 1901 was a charter member of Hotel Dieu's staff. Dr. W. W. Cunningham also began practice in 1891, but soon resettled in Houston for a few years before moving back to Beaumont. He, too, was a charter member of Hotel Dieu's staff. Other staff members of 1901 included Drs. Blewett, H. A. Barr, C.A. Cobb, L. Goldstein, J. D. Gober, J. M. Gober, T. H. Frey, B. F. Cunningham, and others....
