Born Eugene Dennis Hickey on October 12, 1930 in Kingsville, Texas to Perry Xavier and Estelle Valenta Hickey, the third of four children. He died, surrounded by his family, on January 9, 2011 in San Antonio after a lengthy battle with cancer. Dennis was raised in Alice, Texas where he attended William Adams High School. He subsequently attended Texas A&I College. He retired in 1971 from the U.S. Air Force after twenty years of service. His tours of duty included Europe and Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. He started a new career at USAA in 1971, retiring in 1992. He was a member of St. Luke's Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus Chapter 4140, 3rd degree and Chapter 2102, 4th degree. He was a member of the Equestrian Order of Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem, St. Luke's Men's Club, the American Legion and the Knife and Fork Club of San Antonio. He was on the executive board of the Guadalupe Home, an organization for homeless expectant mothers, since its founding in 1997, and the San Antonio Czech Association. He enjoyed traveling and gardening. The closest thing to his heart was his family. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jeannine, his three sons, Steven and wife Lori, Gary and wife Julie, Mark and wife Karol (deceased) and daughter Eleanor and husband Dr. Thomas Ruhnke. He is also survived by two grandsons David Hickey and Michael Hickey and six granddaughters Sara Hickey, Kristen Ruhnke, Dylan Hickey, Lauren Ruhnke, Ellis Hickey, and Kimberly Ruhnke. He is survived by two brothers Perry Hickey and wife Tommie (deceased), Charles Hickey and wife Kaye and sister Imogene Klare and husband Clinton (deceased), and numerous nieces and nephews.
