Bio

Max James Smith, born July 13,1931 in American Fork, Utah County, Utah, USA. He was born to Adelbert and Della Doyle Smith. January 12, 1953, Max James Smith married Connie Moselle Robinson in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple for time and for all eternity. Max died Dec. 1, 2001 in American Fork Utah, from complications from diabetes, kidney failure and stroke. Max had 3 brothers,(Ronald, Doyle and Ralph) and one sister Doris. Max and Connie had 8 children, 3 boys (Harold, Daniel, David) and 5 girls (Rebecca, Kathleen, Robyn, Sara, Emily). Max was raised in American Fork and attended American Fork Schools, graduating from American Fork High School in 1949. Max was an exceptional athlete, and was selected on the All State Basketball team in 1949. He was recruited to many colleges to play basketball. He went to Brigham Young University for one year and then went on to play basketball on Scholarship to Carbon College in Price Utah, or now called The college of Eastern Utah. He stayed at Carbon College for one year and then joined the United States Marine Corps. Hew was first stationed in San Diego for his basic training and went on to Korea for 13 months. Max was blessed to be able to not be on the front lines during the war, and because of his excellent typing skills he learned in High School, was placed into the Postal Department in Korea. Max witnessed terrible things while in Korea, and many of his best buddies were killed. Max always saved his candy ration in Korea, to give to the little children who he always were raiding the garbage cans on the base. After returning from Korea, he married Connie Moselle Robinson Smith on January 12, 1953 in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple, while on furlough. Connie is the daughter of Sherman and Doris Cunningham Robinson, of American Fork, Utah. They live in San Diego for the remainder of his service in the Marines, and then moved back to American Fork Utah to raise their family. Max was a religious man, always studying the scriptures and was able to talk with scriptorians and even teach them his insight on the scriptures. Max held many positions in the church but has enjoyed teaching the children more than anything. Max loved his family and worked diligently at Meadow Gold Dairy for many years, and then for the LDS Church in their custodial department until he retired. Max developed diabetes, and had a triple bypass open heart surgery. Over time, his diabetes caused his kidneys to fail and he was put in dialysis for the remainder of his years. He began having strokes during dialysis and Doctors had to determine which was better... keeping up the dialysis to keep him alive, or having dialysis and stroking leaving him paralyzed or worse. Max courageously chose to go off dialysis and spent the remaining weeks surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Max spent the remainder of his sojourn on this earth at Heritage Convalescent Center, in American Fork, and died there, surrounded by his family. Max's memory and contributions in this life will live forever in the hearts of those whom he touched and loved him.
