D. (Dorothy) Ardean Sowl Styer, 84, of Pullman and a longtime Palouse, WA resident passed away on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011 at the Memory Villas at Bishop Place in Pullman. D. (Dorothy) Ardean Sowl Styer, was born on August 31, 1927, in Fullerton, Nebraska, to Fred and Margaret Sowl. She joined three boys, William, Robert, and Donald and was followed by a brother Wayne, and two sisters, Margaret and Sharon. She started school in Silver Creek, Nebraska, where she was soon being called Ardean, as her first grade class had five girls with the name Dorothy. Later, the family moved to Central City, Nebraska, where she graduated from high school in 1946. Ardean then moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, and attended Lincoln School of Commerce, leading to position as a legal secretary in Lincoln. She met her future husband, Bob, through her brother Bob, who were in the same trucking unit in the Army during World War II. She and Bob were pen pals for a couple of years. In February 1948, she arrived by bus in Colfax, Washington. She married Bob in Vancouver, Washington, on March 25, 1948. Her grandfather, William Samuel Pittenger Eyler, ‘gave' the bride away. After a short wedding trip, they moved onto a farm about 4 ½ miles west of Palouse on the Colfax road. In the fall of 1949, they bought the house in Palouse where they lived until moving to Bishop Place in Pullman in January 2004. Ardean was the mother of four children: Dina, Linda Sue, Lana and Lee. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1968. While her family was young, she was involved in Blue Birds, Camp Fire and Horizon Club. She also taught Sunday school at the Palouse Christian Church for many years. In 1968 she started working in Holland Library at WSU retiring in 1989. She was an avid arts and crafts person, enjoyed sewing, crocheting, fabric painting, bead work, embroidery, metal etching and many more. She also was a great cook, baker and candymaker. Many a family member benefited with wedding, anniversary and birthday cakes baked and decorated by her. She made most of her children's clothes while they were small. She canned and froze the produce from the family's large garden. She was also interested in family genealogy, tracing her ancestors back to the Mayflower and further to the 1400's. She is preceded in death by her father, Fred Sowl; mother, Margaret Sowl; four brothers: William, Robert, Donald, and Wayne Sowl; and infant daughter Linda Sue. She is survived by her husband Robert Styer; daughter Dina and husband Jerald Brannon; daughter Lana and husband Craig Shuman; son Lee and wife Linda Styer; and sisters Margaret Johnson and Sharon Sowl. She has four grandchildren: Nicholas and wife Anna Brannon; Christina Brannon; Timothy Styer; and Andrea and husband Michael Shaffer. She also has three great grandchildren: Daniel Brannon, Zofia Brannon and Carter Shaffer. The funeral service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011 at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman, WA. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Palouse, WA.
