Bio

Gonzales Inquirer Oct. 4, 1996 William E. Cleveland A rosary was recited Sunday and a funeral mass was held on Monday for William Edward Cleveland who died Saturday, September 28 in Austin. He was born October 26, 1898 in Gonzales County to William Jackson and Euphemiea Kucharczyk Cleveland, both of Gonzales County. On January 31, 1923 he married former Hesta Celesta Cady who preceded him in death. On October 12, 1964 he married Elma Louise Snell Long in Yoakum. She preceded him in death on January 23, 1993. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Ray (Mary) Shanklin of Gonzales. Mr. Cleveland may have been the oldest living veteran of World War I in Gonzales. He was a member of St James Catholic Church, a charter member of the Knights of Columbus and the Gonzales American Legion Post. The Rev. Frank Macias officiated at the services with interment at Gonzales City Cemetery under direction of Sydler-Hill Funeral Home. Pallbearers were members of the American Legion.
