Bio

Funeral service for Capt. Jack Walbrick, LFD Retired, will be at 2pm Saturday, October 28, 2023, in the Becker-Rabon Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doug Passmore, Pastor of First Baptist East, Lawton, Oklahoma officiating. Burial with Fire Department Honors will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Jack Walbrick, 94, of Lawton passed away on Monday, October 23, 2023, in Lawton. He was born April 19, 1929, in Spring Creek, Oklahoma, to Frederick and Augusta Walbrick. Jack was the youngest of 10 children, Fred, Arthur, Paul, Ida, George, Albert, Alice, Millie, Lilly and baby Jack (as his sisters would call him). He loved to tell stories about his brothers and sisters of how they helped raise him from when he was only five years old at the time of his father's death. Jack was always a hard worker and prided himself on being able to fix just about anything. He started out working as an ice delivery man in his teens. During that time, he met the love of his life, Neva, and they married in 1948, when Jack was 19 and Neva, 16. They had two sons, Henry Ray (Hank) and Jackie Lee. Jack was a man of many talents and careers. He spent his early years repairing TV's in a shop behind their house on Garfield. The grandkids never experienced the "House on Garfield," but can retell many stories about it passed down from Grandpa Jack. In 1953, Jack went to work for the Lawton Fire Department. He took such pride in being a fireman and loved to talk of his firefighting days and all the wonderful men with whom he worked. Jack retired in 1980, as Captain Jack Walbrick. Jack was also something of an adrenaline junky, not only fighting fires, but having a love for racing cars as well. Many weekends, he could be found at the racetrack racing his beloved race cars, while his sons watched from the fence. After a couple of bad wrecks and a little encouragement from Neva, he gave up racing and took up bluegrass music and farming. Jack spent his retirement years working cattle and pickin' and grinnin' at various locations around Lawton on the weekends. Every Saturday night in Cooperton at the old schoolhouse building, he'd be playing music with the Southern Okies or Wichita Mountain Boys. He hardly missed a gig, except maybe once for his granddaughter's wedding. Though he was a talented man who kept busy with many interests, being a dad and grandfather were the ones he cherished most. Jack is preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Neva, his parents, and 8 of his 9 siblings. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma State Firefighters Association at 2716 NE 50th Street, Oklahoma City, OK.
