ARCADIA — Doris Pester, 75, of Arcadia died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Tom Mullowney will officiate. Burial will be in the Lee Park Cemetery near Arcadia. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Higgins Funeral Home and from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church. A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Memorials are suggested to the St. Josaphat's Catholic Church, the Arcadia American Legion Auxiliary or to the donor's choice. Mrs. Pester was born July 12, 1926 in Custer County to Zera A. and Mary M. (Papiernik) Sell. The family moved to Arcadia when she was 5. She graduated from Arcadia High School in 1944. After high school she worked at the Loup City hospital. In 1945 she began nurse's training in Chicago. She received her R.N. degree from the St. Joseph's School of Nursing in 1948. She earned her B.S. degree at Kearney State College in 1980. She returned to Nebraska in 1950 and was employed at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. She married Byron A. Pester on Aug. 26, 1952. They lived on a farm west of Arcadia. She worked with the bloodmobile and student health screening programs and also as a private duty nurse in hospitals in the area. In 1959, the couple moved to Arcadia, where she worked in the Arcadia Health Center Clinic. She was employed at Valley County Hospital and then with E.S.U. 10 as a school nurse serving Valley, Loup, Garfield, Custer and Sherman counties. She had a 46-year nursing career, with 24 of those years spent as a school nurse. Mr. Pester died in January 1995. She was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church, Arcadia American Legion Auxiliary and served on the Gathering Place Board. She served several years as parade chairman for the Arcadia Fall Festival. She enjoyed gardening and working in her yard and helping and caring for people with health needs around Arcadia. Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Bernard Guggenmos of Sioux City; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Joyce Sell of Lincoln and Marlin and MarJo Sell of Ansley; two sisters-in-law, Marion Sell of Bellevue and Fern Sell of Fairbury; two half-sisters and their husbands, Zelda and Alan Drake of Comstock and Ellyn and Larry Cusimano of Grandview, Mo.; and one half-brother and his wife, Brad and Carolyn Sell of Arcadia. She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Allen Sell and Delwin (Buzz) Sell.
