☆~ VETERAN, WORLD WAR II (1939-1945) ~☆ Joseph M. "Joe" Murphy, 88, of St. Paul died Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at the V.A. Medical Center in Grand Island. Joe was born Dec. 31, 1922, south of Ericson in Greeley County to William and Dora (Baldwin) Murphy. Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Walt Vargason of St. Paul and Patty and Gary Fey of Lincoln; granddaughters, Cassie Fey and Jessie Giardini and her husband, Jeremy; and great-granddaughter, Olive Lee Giardini. Joe was raised on a farm where he helped feed livestock, milk cows and pick corn. He received his schooling in various schools, including Riverdale, Horace, Scotia, Ord, and Fish Creek near Scotia. After his schooling, he worked on various farms for a couple of years and then drove gravel trucks. Joe entered the U.S. Army on Feb. 13, 1943. Joe first served in the U.S. before going overseas during World War II where he landed in Sherbourg, France. His outfit walked across France, Germany, Austria and Italy, getting within a mile of their destination when the war ended. Joe reenlisted and served some of his second duty back in Germany. He received his discharge on Nov. 21, 1946. Joe was united in marriage to Mildred Sevenker on Feb. 18, 1948, in St. Paul. To this union, two daughters were born, Linda and Patty. Joe worked as a coast to coast truck driver for a brewery for many years. He eventually retired and bought some lawn equipment where he did custom mowing and tilling in Grand Island. Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, as well as Nebraska football games and race cars. Joe lived in Parkside Plaza in St. Paul for four years before moving to Matelyn Retirement Community. Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Raymond and Leo Murphy and two sisters, Rosetta Cronk and Lois Fillinger. Graveside were at the at Elmwood Cemetery, St. Paul, NE. with military rites by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul. Source: The Grand Island Independent, September 13, 2011
