Edward Joseph Matulka, 89, Dwight, Nebraska, died Saturday, September 9, 2011 at the Bellevue Medical Center, Bellevue, Nebraska. He was born October 2, 1921 to August and Rose (Trousil) Matulka of Ulysses and graduated from Assumption Catholic High School, Dwight, in 1938. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he farmed west of Dwight. Ed married Dorothy Marie Mancheski of Green Bay, Wisconsin October 1, 1949. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 110 Dwight, Assumption Catholic Church, Brainard Farmers Co-op, David City Knights of Columbus and Dwight Volunteer Fire Dept. An avid fisherman, he enjoyed raising chickens, ducks and geese; planting trees on his property and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by his father, August Mike Matulka; mother, Rose Marie Trousil Matulka; sisters and brothers-in-law, Rose M. (Emil J.) Kouba, Marie A. (Joseph) Ostry, Anna (Charles) Voboril, Adeline (Ernest) Turek. Brothers: Vaclav (James) Matulka, Joseph Robert Matulka; brothers and sisters-in-law: Ernest (Madeline) Matulka; Raymond Stanley (Helen) Matulka. Granddaughters: Sherry L. Matulka, Lesley L. Lund; nephew: Emil J. Kouba, Jr. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m., Tuesday, September 13, Assumption Catholic Church. Interment with Military Honors Assumption Catholic Cemetery. Survivors who have died since 2011: Spouse: Dorothy Marie Mancheski Matulka (July 25, 1925-November 5, 2023) Son: Gregory Edward Matulka, Sr. (September 14, 1952-July 6, 2013) Grandson: Gregory Edward Matulka Jr. ( December 18, 1979-April 20, 2023 ) Son-in-law: Warren "Scott" Lund (April 24, 1954-November 22, 2017) Sister-in-law: Adaline "Eldeen" Rejda Matulka (March 1, 1928-February 16, 2021) Nephew: Paul James Matulka (March 31, 1957-March 1, 2012) Great niece: Teresa Ann Kouba Rountree (January 29, 1966-June 7, 2019) ********** Edward J. Matulka Pfc, US Army. Qualified Rifle Marksman, World War II December 28, 1942 - February 28, 1946 Served in the 555th Engineer Heavy Ponton Battalion, activated March 1, 1943. After training in the states on construction, testing and maintenance of heavy ponton bridges, footbridges, rafting, ferrying and stormboat techniques, plus testing and developing new equipment for the US Army Corp of Engineers, he was stationed in Central Europe from February 27, 1944 until June 18, 1945. The battalion arrived in Liverpool, England February 27, 1944 for orientation in combat training and left March 13 for Auffay, France where they assembled vehicles and equipment for combat missions. The battalion left March 23 for Germany, where they assisted troops in crossing the Rhine River at Rhein-Durkholm. They also assisted troops in river crossings and transportation supply missions at St. Joan K, France, and in Germany at Langmoil, Worms, Gross Walstadt, Heidelburg, Landenburg, Heilb. ronn, Markt-Heidenfield, Walldurn, Ulm, Antworp, Munheim, Goppingen and Oberammergau. He returned to the states June 18, 1945 where he was stationed at Camp Washington, DC.
