Ex-Bucs Pitcher, Dies BAYTOWN - Ward Jackson (Joe) Gibbs. 57, of 2101 Utah St., died Wednesday morning In John Sealy Hospital, Galveston. Funeral services will be held at 2p.m. Friday at the Earthman Funeral Home chapel in Baytown. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery, Houston. Mr. Gibbs, known in the sports world as Joe Gibbs, former professional baseball player, was born April 9, 1911, in Beeville. He had lived in Baytown 28 years and had been employed as a machinist at Humble Oil Co., Baytown, since 1940. Joe Gibbs pitched for the Galveston Buccaneers baseball club of the Texas League in 1934-1936 and played in the Dixie series in 1934. As a member of the Buccaneers, his team was the first to win the Texas League pennant since 1899 and of the South Texas League since 1904. After his playing days here, he played for the Fort Worth team of the Texas League and with the Kansas City Club of the American Baseball Association. Later, he managed a semi-pro baseball team for several years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Gibbs of Baytown; a son, James D. Gibbs of Houston; one grandson and a number of brothers and sisters. Pallbearers will be Perry Britton. Avery T. Martin, C. R. Martin, Floyd O'Neil, Roy Comeaux and Collis Chambers.
