Samuel William Austin was born April 25, 1842 in Trimble County, Kentucky. His twin sister was Keziah. They were the 6th and 7th children of Nathanial and Matilda [Wright] Austin. Nathaniel was born in South Carolina [1796]. Matilda in South Carolina [1807]. They were married in Garrard County, Kentucky September 4, 1825 and moved to Jefferson County, Indiana [Lancaster Township] about 1850. Samuel enlisted as a private on June 15, 1862 in Co. C 55th regiment Indiana for 3 months. Discharged September 15, 1862, he then married Harriet Shepherd on October 8, 1863 in Jennings County, Indiana. He then re-enlisted as a private on December 20, 1863 in Co. H 10th regiment Indiana Calvary. He was honorably discharged on August 31, 1865 for reason of expiration of the war. He was taken prisoner at Richmond, Kentucky.
