Born in Nacogdoches County, Texas, on March 12, 1897, to Katherine Driver and John Moses Scogin. He grew up on a farm with four sisters, Allie, Gertrude, Rennie, and Lydia, along with two brothers, William and David. On July 31, 1918, he married Miss Vennie Webb in Nacogdoches County and two months later enlisted in the US Navy on September 18, during World War I. The war ended two months following his enlistment on November 11, 1918, and his services were no longer needed. Honorably discharged on December 29, 1918. Following the war, they were blessed with a son, John Edwin, in 1923. They lived in Shreveport, where Martin was employed as a billing clerk for the railroad express agency. He later retired and received a railroad pension. Martin died in Shelby County at the age of 86 on April 8, 1983, and was buried in the Mount Olive Cemetery, Timpson, Texas. His wife Venie joined him in 1987. Day is done; God is nigh. Bio by Larry E. Hume, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8904, Center, Texas.©
