Obit Summary: Emil John Hanzel (April 4, 1889 – June 17, 1971) was a longtime Rupert, Idaho automobile dealer and community member. Born in Dodge, Nebraska, he spent his early adulthood in business, first owning a hardware store and farms in Oakley after relocating from Nebraska in 1909. Emil married Ann Zingg on October 26, 1916, in Platte Center, Nebraska; she preceded him in death in 1951. In 1926, he moved his family to Rupert, Idaho, where he established the Hanzel Chevrolet Co., an automobile agency that he continued to operate throughout his life. Although he began partial retirement in 1956, he remained associated with the business. Deeply involved in his community, Emil was a charter member of the Rupert Elks Lodge, a past member of the Rupert Rotary Club, and an active member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church. He died at age 82 at Minidoka Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Survivors included his son his daughter, three brothers, and five grandchildren.
