Bio

Ralph James Wise, 94, Pickrell, NE, entered his celestial resting place Monday, August 22, 2011, at his home in Pickrell, NE, surrounded by his family. He was born on December 26, 1916, in a sod dugout on the banks of the Dismal River 18 miles south of Thedford (Thomas County), NE. The first 10 years of his life were spent in a sod house. In 1925, his parents moved the family to rural Callaway (Custer County), NE. Ralph went to country school until the family moved to Callaway where he went to town school, but had to stop to help with the family. Ralph was united in marriage to Clara Irene Rhoads in Callaway, NE, on November 19, 1939. They were married for 71 years, 9 months, 2 days. To this union 3 children were born, Janice Waltke of Beatrice, Charles of Omaha, and Albert "Bud" of Geneva, NE. In 1936 Ralph went to work for the Union Pacific Railroad and worked for the railroad for 43 years. He worked his way from a laborer to a Foreman. In 1978 he was selected Section Foreman of the Year for the Nebraska Division of which he was very proud. Ralph was a 60+ year member of the UMC of Pickrell where he served on many different committees. He was a 60+ year member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees. He liked to work with his hands building wooden things, especially wooden train whistles. He loved horses and dogs. He is survived by his wife, Clara Irene Wise of Pickrell, NE; 1 daughter, Janice Waltke of Beatrice; 2 sons, Albert "Bud" Wise and wife, Paulette, of Geneva, Charles Wise and wife, Becky, of Omaha; 6 grandchildren, Tina, Shane, Robin, Michael, Megan, and John; 14 great grandchildren; 1 great-great granddaughter; 1 brother, Warren Wise of Gibbon, NE; 1 sister-in-law, Hazel Lamp of Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Douglas and Josephine Louisa (Stinman) Wise; 1 brother, Douglas Wise; 4 sisters, Helen VanCleave, Lena Wise, Erma Ruppert, Francis Perry; son-in-law, Willard Waltke. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2011, at United Methodist Church, Pickrell with Pastor Lila Bottolfsen officiating. There will be a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m. at the church. Burial will be in Pleasantview Cemetery, Pickrell, NE. Visitation will be held at Harman-Wright Mortuary on Thursday (8/25/2011) and Friday (8/26/2011) from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. with the family greeting friends on Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established in lieu of flowers to the Pickrell United Methodist Church with the mortuary in charge of arrangements.
