Helen Esther Hafenbredl, age 88, formerly of Auburndale, and Wisconsin Rapids, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at Walnut Grove Assisted Living, MerrilI. Funeral services are 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Wisconsin Rapids. The Rev. George Nelson Graham will officiate. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery in Auburndale. Friends may call at Ritchay Funeral Home in Wisconsin Rapids from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Church from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will be a parish prayer vigil at 6:45 p.m.Wednesday at the funeral home. Helen was born March 30, 1923 to Fredolin and Rose Willfahrt. She attended Sunshine School in the town of Milladore. She married William "Bill" Hafenbredl on April 18, 1944, at St. Mary's Church in Auburndale. He died July 8, 2006. Helen and Bill farmed in Auburndale for 30 years. After Bill's retirement, they moved to Wisconsin Rapids and joined St. Lawrence Parish. Helen was active in the parish and is remembered for fish frys, rye bread, and cooking funeral dinners. In later years, Helen and Bill were cared for at Angelus Retirement Community in Nekoosa and Three Oaks Nursing Home in Marshfield. For the past nine months, Helen has been a resident of Walnut Grove Alzheimer's Unit in Merrill. "The family would like to thank all the people who cared for Helen with such kindness and patience in her struggle with Alzheimer's." Helen enjoyed cooking and baking, playing cards, traveling where she enjoyed her trip to Austria and throughout the United States, and she also loved attending family functions. Helen also enjoyed going fishing in Canada with family and friends. Helen is survived by son, William (Jan) Hafenbredl of Marshfield, daughter, Virginia Hafenbredl of Marshfield, daughter, Jeanette (Ted) Nikolai of Marshfield, and Don (Mary Lou) Hafenbredl of Wisconsin Rapids; 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in law, Margaret Hafenbredl of Wisconsin Rapids and Florence Willfahrt of Tripoli. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; parents, 3 brothers and one great-granddaughter.
