"Daniel Rapalyea Allen was born at Newton, Queens County, New York on the August 2, 1816 to Robert Allen and Alletta Whaley. He married Eliza Martin on Jan. 22, 1837 at the Dutch Reform Church at Jamaica, New York. Daniel R. Allen and Eliza Martin's children included; Marinda b. June 21, 1838; d. There were no children born of the union of Daniel Rapalyea Allen and his other wives; Margaret Shipley and Esther Ann Lowder. Daniel R. Allen was a miller. When his father's farm was sold, Daniel and Eliza moved to Flushing, New York where he managed a fouring mill for a Scotsman named Douglas. Daniel and Eliza went to visit his Uncle Isaac Allen in New York, attended a great Methodist revival, then went on to visit Uncle John Martin and Aunt Hannah Martin in Brookly. Aunt Hannah had been a Member of the LDS Church for five years. After attending meetings with Aunt Hannah on Feb. 14, 1842, both Daniel and Eliza were baptized and became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that evening. On the 1st of April 1847, Daniel and his family left Flushing for St. Louis, Missouri, having originally trided to get passage by ship toward their ultimate destination of the Great Salt Lake Valley. They traveled over land, reaching St. Louis in May, 1847. At St. Louis Daniel Allen managed a large steam flouring mill owned by Mr. Haslam for three years. From St. Louis they joined other Mormons in Kanesville (Council Bluffs), Iowa, and Daniel left for Perryville, Perry County, Missouri, to take charge of a mill, returning to Kanesville April 20, 1853. On June 5, 1853 they left Council Bluffs to begin their journey across the plains by wagon and had three yoke of cattle and several cows, arriving in the Valley of the Great Salt Lake three months later Sept. 1853. They did not travel on Sundays. Daniel married four other wives including Eliza Lacy, Ann Long Didsbury, Margaret Shipley and Esther Ann Lowder. When U.S. Troops were approaching in 1857, Daniel and his family wnt to Pondtown, (later Salem) in Utah County until orders came for their return to Jordan that July, 1858. Danie ran a new mill for Bishop Archibald Gardiner at West Jordan for seven years and bough land along the Jordan River. About 1860 he exchanged his Jordan River land for lands and rights to American Fork Canyon. After a long series of difficulties (mill construction, opening roads, severe flood), he moved his grist mill, in 1863, from the mouth of the canyon to the town of American Fork. Before his death on January 23 1873, Daniel Rapalyea was in charge of the mills for Brigham Young. Daniel age 57 died of pneumonia in a house at the mill farm of Brigham Young Chase Mill in what is now known as Liberty Park in Salt Lake City. Daniel was buried in Salt Lake City Cemetery and later moved to West Jordan Cemetery. He also has a Monument at Wight's Fort Cemetery."
